Construction Sketches / Details 1

Often the final details of a project are best developed during construction when the design exists as a tangible space or physical item. To facilitate this process I develop, in conjunction with the client and contractor, sketches that refine the original project details and design concept.

Modern Magazine Rack

A small modern magazine rack to hold the current issues we still receive. I built it this weekend from 2 x 2 (1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″) quarter sawn oak in two symmetrical sides. The base piece(s) and legs are angled at 15 degrees and the base grooved to catch the edges of the magazines. I sized it to fit Fine Homebuilding, which is probably the largest magazine I receive so overall it is very compact but because of the weight of the oak it also very stable. All the fastners, with the exception of the two screws that connect the bases, are blind and hidden by the seam between the two sides.
